Abstract

AOE-111221 is a piece of parchment, now digitized, that describes how to keep an undisclosed object, designated AOE-111221-A, a secret. Its format follows that of known containment documents, though its origin and age are unknown. This object is described in a section labeled “Anomaly Description”, which is approximately three times the length of the instructions, and directly follows them on the page.

Anomalous Properties

The text of AOE-11221 is refractory to visual comprehension, and individuals attempting to read it will not retain knowledge or understanding of any details therein regarding AOE-111221-A.

This is not the case, however, if the text is “read” while one’s eyes are closed. When approached in this fashion, a set of consistent facts manifest in the consciousness of the individual. Likewise, a static set of data consistently emerges to those who are vision-impaired, and who are asked to nonetheless “read” AOE-111221.

According to testing, a section titled “Supplement” directly follows the description. An individual reportedly experiences a psychic conversation with AOE-111221-A when reading this section that is idiosyncratic upon each rendition. Testing subjects report frequent revelations personal to their unique experiences, often having immense feelings of closure or resolution to prior stressors and problems. Elation and a calmness can follow these interactions, with the phenomenon most akin to profound religious experiences. Joyful tears are a common result, with participants insistent upon emoting these uninterrupted and to their fullest, and who consider the crying to be an important responsibility. These tears do not appear to be remorseful, and in some cases can progress to episodes of emotional incontinence, accompanied by laughter.

After testing, approximately 75% of individuals seek to excuse themselves at regular but brief intervals throughout the day in order to be alone, and a large subset of these become practitioners of the meditative arts, some professionally. Subjects with vision loss experience AOE-11222-A, but do not typically display a similar degree of emotional or behavioral effect; the reason for this is unknown. Nearly all participants decline repeating the test, with one individual noting that “there is no need for another time”.

The specific instructions within AOE-11221 regarding the containment of AOE-11221-A remain unknown. All tested individuals, including those on staff, politely and apologetically decline to answer.

It is currently theorized that the unknown anomaly described in AOE-111221 is not antimemtetic, but the captive of a selective, self-terminating mechanism that spoils cognitive access to its contents if its existence is communicated by a third party, or in a forced manner.
